OUR FAVOURITE BUDGET UPDATES for your diy home renovation

We love a good budget upgrade! And I’m guessing you do, too, since you’re reading this blog post.

We want to highlight for you, some of our absolute favourite low-cost, low-effort upgrades to instantly transform your spaces.

First up is cabinet hardware. Many of you have likely lived in a home, or currently do live in a home, where the kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanity feels dated and in need of a facelift.
While you may want to change the stain, repaint, or entirely replace your cabinets, a big overhaul like that may not be in the budget. Or perhaps the goal of updating the look of your cabinets can be achieved without needing an extension upgrade.

We suggest working with the style of your home and cabinets, but finding an updated set of hardware that will give your cabinets the facelift it needs with a much lower financial investment that re-facing or replacing.

Here are some of our favourites, and the ones you choose should match the style of the rest of your kitchen or bathroom:

Next up is lighting! Lighting is one of those things that can instantly date a home. The styles come and go so quickly that even a rather “new” home (say, one that was built 10 years ago) may look dated depending on the lighting. And, of course, there’s the classic “boob lighting” that is common in so many contractor builds.

We suggest replacing most outdated lights in your home with super low-profile flush-mount disc lights and saving your investment pieces (like chandeliers and oversized pendants) for above the dining table.
It’s important to note that these lights are simple and aren’t meant to give a “wow” factor. Rather, they are meant to blend in and almost go unnoticeable so that your stand-out pieces (like an elegant chandelier or beautiful bathroom vanity sconces) really draw the eye.

We have installed many of these lights and highly recommend them:

Lastly, trim paint is the ultimate “I don’t know what’s different but it looks better in here” home improvement trick.

Even if you can’t afford or don’t have the time to repaint an entire room, apply wallpaper, or create an accent wall, you can usually get a good can of trim paint on sale somewhere for around $60. One large can should do much of the house (If you’re just applying a fresh coat of the same colour)

*NOTE* If you have wood/stained trim it is our honest personal preference that it not be painted. Wood trim is classic, it’s beautiful, it warms up a room, and can go with any look when the right paint colours are chosen. Of course, you are free to do whatever will bring you joy in your home, but here at Rural Revamp, we love wood trim!

For those who need a fresh coat of trim paint here are some of our suggestions:

We hope you’ve found something in this post to help you scratch that itch to update something in your home.
